Lumagen Announces HDMI to CAT-6 Extender
Lumagen, Inc. a leader in video processor technology is announcing a new line of HDMI extender products. The first products in the series are a HDMI to CAT-6 extender, and a HDMI to HDMI repeater.
Jim Peterson, Lumagen’s President, stated “We decided to add HDMI extender products to our portfolio because we had so many calls from our dealers about the failure of competitive HDMI extender products to work reliably. Our HDMI extender products are designed to be the most robust, and reliable, in the industry. Our HDMI extenders are already proving themselves by solving HDMI transmission issues in systems where other well regarded competitive products have failed.”
The HDMI-CAT6 extender provides buffering not only for the video signals but also the DDC control signals, allowing reliable transmission distances at 1080p60 of over 50 meters total distance from source to destination. Many competitive products buffer video in the receiver only, and have no buffering at all for the DDC signals used for the HDCP/EDID interface. Lumagen estimates that about 1/3 of the support calls it receives concerning the failure of competitive HDMI extenders relate to the failure of the HDCP/EDID signals. To overcome this limitation Lumagen buffers both the video and control signals in both the transmitter and receiver boxes. This means the HDMI input cable to the transmitter box is isolated and buffered from the CAT cable between the transmitter and receiver which in turn is isolated and buffered from the receivers output HDMI cable. This design increases the maximum reliable transmission distance from the source to the destination device. Lumagen has demonstrated reliable operation in the lab with 30 meters of HDMI 1.3 cable from the source to the HDMI-CAT6 transmitter, plus 30 meters of CAT6 cable from the transmitter to the receiver, plus a 2-meter HDMI cable from the receiver to the display, at 1080p60.
The HDMI-HDMI repeater can recover and buffer HDMI signals using 30 meters of 22 AWG HDMI cable. Like the Lumagen HDMI-CAT6 product, the HDMI-HDMI repeater buffers both video and control signals, maximizing reliable cable length.
The HDMI-CAT6 is in production and available immediately. The HDMI-HDMI is slated for July production.
